Refik Anadol – Machine Hallucinations: Architectural Studies
‘Machine Hallucinations: Architectural Studies’ is part of an ongoing synthetic reality collection that explores the relationship between memories and dreams, recognition and perception. By exploring the mind of a machine through the deployment of machine learning, the work offers a new cinematic cartography for data universes.
In this particular instantiation, Anadol uses a neural network trained on a dataset of 103,727 images of European architecture throughout history, containing Renaissance, Medieval, Baroque and Gothic periods of architectural photographic memories. Dreaming up imagined spaces, Architectural Studies, investigates alternative physical realities based on those we have already built.
Refik Anadol is a media artist and director, whose main fields of work include site-specific public art in the form of parametric data sculptures, live AV performances, and immersive installations.
