Nkisi

“Nkisi” is the Congolese word for a sacred medicine, or  a spiritual object created for the investigation and healing of chronic problems. The work of the Belgium-raised, London-based Melika Ngombe Kolongo is designed to do exactly that on a wider, societal level.

The artist’s ethos and music are imbued with a certain punk sensibility along with a political pushback against conformity. As a co-founder of NON Worldwide, a collective of African artists and of the diaspora, Nkisi aims to disrupt the postcolonial axis of power in South Africa, the UK and the US—a lofty mission carried out at the breakneck speed of her best mixes.

Her DJ sets draw from a wide range of influences, from African club tracks to gabber, forming a fast-paced and exhilarating experience in the dance.

This performance is presented in the framework of SHAPE (Sound, Heterogeneous Art and Performance in Europe).
