Although only in his early twenties, history will already remember DJ Lag as a true pioneer. The young artist propelled the typical Gqom sound from Durban beyond the confines of the coastal city, straight into the capitals of the international electronic music industry.
DJ Lag originally started producing hip-hop beats for his brother, who wanted to become a rapper at the time. A shift to the rapidly emerging Durban Gqom style would soon prove to be fruitful: his superb production skills have played a big part in transforming this South African, hypnotic sub-genre of house music into an enviably innovative participant in the global scene.
The artist’s explosive DJ sets full of dark, bass-heavy tunes and jerky rhythms have set crowds on fire across the globe ever since his international debut in Poland two years ago.
