Renata Avila is a human rights lawyer specialized in Intellectual Property and Technology. Involved in Internet and Human Rights research since 2006, she works with the Web Inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee in an effort to uphold human rights in the digital age as his Senior Digital Rights Advisor for the Web Foundation. She serves as a Board Member of Creative Commons. She is also a member of Courage Foundation advisory board, assisting whistleblowers at risk and a member of Diem25´s Coordinating Collective, a paneuropean movement promoting democracy.

She is currently writing a book on “Digital Colonialism”, exploring global digital trade, technology sovereignty, digital inequality, artificial intelligence and more generally, exploring threats to democracy in the digital age.
