Grant Cieciura and Tiago De Sousa met while studying a master’s degree in the UK in 2010. They have worked together as an artis collaboration since 2011. Through installation, workshops and participatory events, Cieciura and De Sousa invite audiences into a dialogue with their work by removing the barriers between art, artist and audience. Each work is created through a process of unfolding and forming over time, and is part of an ongoing exploration into art as an experience.
Referring to the to the original ZERO event planned fifty years ago on The Pier of Scheveningen which never took place, Cieciura and De Sousa will countdown back to Zero and begin again. Using the utilitarian white form of the reinforced ring binder as a means to represent ‘0’, the hidden form and structure underneath The Pier of Scheveningen will be transformed by the public; a viral art work at night. Each 0, infinitesimal on its own in relation to the pier, when placed on mass at night upon the underneath structure and lit by ultra violet light, will converge in a spectacle of shimmering fluorescence and seeming movement amongst the darkened spaces and recesses, informing and highlighting unknown and unseen aspects.
Cieciura and De Sousa, being part of the live art work, will distribute strips of 0’s to the public; each 0 being then placed by the public onto a chosen aspect underneath the pier. As the work progresses the 0’s will multiply virally and converge. The UV light will be shone, either by Cieciura and De Sousa using torches or via a set of static UV lights. The light, a key motif of the Zero movement, will transform the 0’s, their shimmering luminosity contrasting against the muted weather worn surfaces of the pier; an alien, other worldly view: a new beginning.
Günther Uecker wrote in ZERO 3, “Immediate experience comes only when we ourselves participate. To obtain widest participation, the production of art must cease to be limited to the individual.” Public participation is integral to the practice of Cieciura and De Sousa. As the public place their 0’s upon the pier, Cieciura De Sousa will informally talk to members of the public about the work; informing of the ZERO movement, the significance of the white 0, it’s connection to the pier, as well as the importance of the space and light in context of the intentions of the ZERO movement. Cieciura and De Sousa will design a keepsake to distribute at the event.
