Zebra Katz x Torus

"Creating a strong, black, other, queer male is something that really needed to happen because you don't see that that often, especially not in hip-hop"

Zebra Katz x Torus

The program on Friday for Zuid +1 features a unique back 2 back appearance by Zebra Katz and Torus. New York rapper Zebra Katz’ explosive yet unpredictable live shows will match-up with Torus’ slow, bass heavy, warm and atmospheric sounds.

It’s been a long journey for multimedia performance artist turned rapper and producer, Ojay Morgan. Emerging from the same electro-tinged, fashion-aligned New York scene that also produced the likes of Lana Del Rey and Azealia Banks, the Brooklynite first came to prominence with “Ima Read”, a growled minimalist banger released by Diplo’s Mad Decent imprint in 2012. The video has since accumulated more than 2 million views on YouTube, while the track provided the sonic backbone for a Rick Owens show at Paris Fashion Week and landed remixes from the likes of Tricky, Gangsta Boo and Busta Rhymes. In the years that followed he’s remained active, making music through Mad Decent and the bass-centric Helsinki label Signal Life, as well as independently through his own label ZFK Records – all while improving his live show. Recently he has released the brand new “Nu Renegade” EP, again on his own label and working side by side with the prestigious Bristih producer Leila.

Torus, Joeri Woudstra from The Hague, is known for his slow, bass heavy, warm and atmospheric productions. Torus took quite an alternative outlandish route before he entered the Dutch scene. The producer got a lot of attention from the London-based Sonic Router, which started a label especially to release his debut EP, followed by collaborations with big names (Slugabed, Alphabets Heaven, Dynoo, Montgomery Clunk, etc.), the first prize at ‘De Grote Prijs van Zuid-Holland’, acclaim in international media and gigs in the Netherlands and abroad. Torus is also a gifted graphic artist which becomes apparent is his self-made video for ‘Feeel’.

Torus is being presented within the framework of SHAPE – a platform for innovative music and audiovisual art from Europe – and is supported by the Creative Europe program of the European Union. More information: www.shapeplatform.eu
