Michelle Lewis-King – Pulse Project

"Bespoke sonic compositions by utilising Chinese pulse diagnosis to read the interior cosmological landscape of another person"

Michelle Lewis-King – Pulse Project

Update: all ‘Pulse Reading’ sessions are fully booked. You can still experience Michelle’s ‘uls Sculptures’ which are presented in between all the 4DSOUND sessions.

Performance artist and acupuncturist Michelle Lewis-King creates bespoke sonic compositions by utilising Chinese pulse diagnosis to read the interior cosmological landscape of another person – a method that creates unique records of moments of embodied consciousness that exists between oneself and another, and between different cultural approaches for understanding and mediating the body. Pulse reading, comparative case histories real-time graphic scoring of participant’s pulses and generative soundscape compositions are techniques used to inquire into the cultural encounter between human beings, medicine and technology. Michelle will host individual pulse reading sessions for a very limited amount of participants and will publicly present the resulting sonifications of the participant’s bodies in 4DSOUND.

Michelle Lewis-King is an artist and lecturer exploring sound in relation to embodiment and was awarded a research fellowship in Digital Performance by the Cultures of the Digital Economy Research Institute at Anglia Ruskin University. Michelle’s research investigates the contemporary convergence between science, art, touch and technology. Her creative practice draws upon her transdisciplinary training in the fields of fine art, performance, audio programming, Chinese Medicine, biomedicine and clinical practice. Michelle has shown her work both nationally and internationally. Recent group shows include, ‘Digital Futures’ at the V&A Museum, ‘Artist’s Games’ at Spike Island, ‘Future Fluxus’ at Anglia Ruskin Gallery curated by Bronac Ferran and futurecity as part of the 50th anniversary of Fluxus, ‘Experimental Notations’ at The Royal Nonesuch Gallery in Oakland, CA, ‘Hot Summer Salon’ at the Oakland Underground Film Festival and ‘Rencontres Internationales’ at various locations in Paris, Madrid and Berlin.

For 4DSOUND: Circadian, Michelle will do a limited number of individual pulse reading sessions of the audience. The resulting Pulse Sculptures will be played in 4DSOUND throughout the day in between performances. Michelle will also give an Artist Talk on Sept 25th & 26th, going into more detail about the theory of Chinese Medicine and explaining her process from pulse reading to spatial sound.
