biography:

The 'Past Imperfect' exhibition gives an insight in what it's like to experience the presence of different periods, temporalities and forms of existence in modern Russia. Young artists perceive and visualize the experiences of their generation.

A new generation of artists have literally lived through several historical cycles; born into the Soviet reality, they spent their childhood in the period of “shock reforms”, started their career in a period of “stabilization” but now live and work in today’s (post-)crisis reality. The artists in this exhibition describe their experience of living through various historical fragments. An artwork becomes a meeting place for different historical periods and a method of communicating between these various times - historical, internal or mythical. Various forms of “past imperfect” times come together in notions of building/reconstructing ruins, memory, an “eternal present” in technological utopias and pop culture, as well as through different encounters with daily inter-subjectivity within the time of network communications. The participants of this project are
young artists, mostly graduates of the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA Moscow). They are trying to perceive and visualize the experiences of their generation, alongside the contradictions of the development of civil society in Russia.

The exhibition was curated by Joseph Backstein (artistic director of the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art) and Yasha Yavorskaya and was developed within the framework of the Netherlands-Russia year 2013 and the planned activities of TodaysArt in Moscow.
