Awesome Tapes From Africa

In 2004-2005, Brian Shimkovitz studied hip-hop in Ghana. Wandering around at local markets, Shimkovitz discovered a wealth of obscure music on old-fashioned cassette tapes. He began collecting and cataloguing these tapes, and ended up with a large collection of African music that most people outside of Africa have probably never heard of. In 2006, Shimkovitz launched a blog (Awesome Tapes from Africa), on which he shares a new mix each week. At TodaysArt, Shimkovitz will bring his best tapes and treat you to a unique mix of great African music, from electro-juju (King Sunny Ade) to disco highlife (J.A. Adofo) to Senegalese rap (Bill Diakhou) to Kenyan guitar breakdowns (Charles A. Chepkwony) to Zimbabwean dance numbers (John Chibadura) and beyond.
