In the installation "I sing as the bird sings" (2008), the private idiosyncratic act of listening to a singing bird becomes the artist's own gesture. The epitome of a gesture in life, as that of the finching (vinken) contest practiced in Belgium, is an action set on repeat by the force of life; this force is best understood by repeating the act itself. Each projection in the installation portrays a man sitting on a chair in the outdoors, listening to the caged bird in front of him. For an hour long, during which the frame is constant, the image is altered only by occasional passers-by, and a viewer is submerged in a tune of the singing bird only when approaching each individual projection.
