Outre
Outre is a unique event: a distinctly altered theatrical world where music hall meets end of the pier freak show meets ghost train: a disturbing but extraordinary beautiful place within which Darren Johnston’s powerful choreography for his company of six dancers exists in all its startling, haunting originality. In a half-lit haze on a monochrome stage a chanteuse sings a fragmented lyric: a woman in a hooped frock has a mannequin’s face:
a salsa dancer twitches 		to radio static and a Japanese ghost-girl gyrates in falling rain. All appear in their black-and-white world somewhere on the edge of consciousness.

With commissioned music from Christian Vogel and Warp artists including Jamie Lidell and Tyondai Braxton (Battles), Darren Johnston has created a seamless unity of live performance, music and visual design in a way that engages on a myriad of sensory levels to manipulate, persuade and above all, enthrall.
